KNUST is cooking again —
and this time, it's on two wheels.
Final-year Automobile
Engineering students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
have built a fully functional electric bike as their final-year project,
turning a classroom requirement into a genuine piece of engineering.
The project moves the
students well beyond textbook theory. Building a working electric bike from
scratch means solving real problems in motor integration, battery management,
frame design, and power efficiency — the same fundamentals that underpin the electric
vehicle industry worldwide.
Part of a bigger pattern
at KNUST
This isn't an isolated
flash of student ingenuity. KNUST's Automobile Engineering department has
produced a string of similar projects in recent years, including a
student-built electric delivery bike aimed at Ghana's motorbike courier
industry, and "E-IMO," a fully indigenous electric vehicle built by a
joint Automobile Engineering and Indigenous Art and Technology team for campus
logistics. Together, they point to a department that's increasingly treating
electric mobility as a serious training ground for its graduates, not just a
novelty project.

Why it matters
Projects like this matter
for more than campus bragging rights. Ghana's transport sector is under growing
pressure to cut fuel costs and emissions, and graduates who've already built a
working electric vehicle by the time they leave university arrive in the job
market with practical experience most fresh engineering grads don't have. It's
also a strong signal to prospective students and industry partners that KNUST's
engineering programmes are producing hands-on innovators, not just
exam-passers.
From the classroom to the real world, this year's final-year cohort is proving that the next generation of Ghanaian engineers is more than ready to build solutions of its own — no import required.
