Senior High School students across Ghana are closing for the 2025/2026
academic year this week, but not all on the same day, and the Ghana Education
Service (GES) is urging parents not to assume otherwise.
Under the Single-Track system, SHS 1 and SHS 2 students close on Friday,
August 21, 2026, after a term that ran from May 4. Students in Transitional
schools stay longer, closing on September 4. The gap has caused confusion in
past terms, with some parents picking up children a full two weeks early or
late because they assumed every school followed the same calendar.

SHS 3 students are not affected by either date. Final-year students
across both systems finished their academic year on June 21, 2026, following
the WASSCE period, which ran from April 20 to June 20.
When school reopens
GES has already released the approved calendar for the next academic
year. Single Track SHS 1 and SHS 2 students return on September 18, 2026, and
will remain in school until January 29, 2027. SHS 3 students also resume on
September 18, but follow a separate schedule built around preparations for
WASSCE 2027, which GES has scheduled for April 6 to June 18, 2027.
Transitional schools follow a different pattern altogether, mixing
on-campus teaching with off-campus or online learning periods. GES has advised
parents to check the specific calendar that applies to their child's school
rather than assume the general dates apply.
What GES wants parents to confirm before pick-up
With closing week underway, GES and school authorities are asking
parents to verify three things directly with the school, rather than relying on
WhatsApp groups or social media:
The student's exact calendar type, Single Track or Transitional, and the
confirmed closing date for that specific school.
Whether report cards, continuous assessment scores, or other academic
records are ready for collection, and whether they must be picked up in person.
The confirmed reopening date for September, particularly for
Transitional schools, where in-school and off-campus periods can differ from
one school to the next.
GES has also confirmed there are no outstanding changes expected to this
calendar before the new term begins, though the council has previously adjusted
term dates on short notice, so parents of Transitional-school students in
particular should keep checking official communication from the school in the
coming weeks.
